Equinor’s Renewable Energy Milestone in Poland
Equinor’s New Solar Plant: Lipno
Equinor has launched its third solar plant in Poland, Lipno, which has begun test production. This addition boosts Equinor’s onshore renewable capacity in Poland to approximately 200 MW, reinforcing its presence in one of Europe’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
Location and Development
Lipno, located in the Wielkopolskie province, has a capacity of 53 MW. It was developed and is operated by Wento, Equinor’s fully-owned Polish subsidiary.
Growth of Wento
Since Equinor acquired Wento in 2021, the company has expanded from a small-scale solar developer to a major power producer. Wento now operates three solar plants and one onshore wind park in Poland, totaling around 200 MW. This portfolio generates about 280 GWh annually, enough to power approximately 140,000 Polish households.
Power Trading and Market Integration
Danske Commodities, Equinor’s energy trading arm, has signed a balancing agreement with Lipno and will commercialize the produced power in the Polish market. This agreement leverages Danske Commodities’ 15 years of power trading experience in Poland.
Future Growth and Diversification
Wento’s project pipeline has more than doubled since the acquisition, now exceeding 3 GW, and includes battery storage projects. Earlier this year, Wento won a Polish Capacity Market Auction with four battery storage projects totaling around 400 MW/1.6 GWh.
Strategic Vision
Equinor is committed to supporting Poland’s energy transition by diversifying energy sources and increasing renewable capacity. In addition to onshore renewables, Equinor is developing three large-scale offshore wind projects in partnership with Polenergia and supplying natural gas from Norway via the Baltic Pipe.
Equinor’s country manager in Poland, Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk, emphasizes the company’s role as a reliable energy partner for Poland, aiming to build a diverse and sustainable energy portfolio for the country’s future.
