Hywind Tampen Offshore Wind Farm: Pioneering Innovation in Offshore Wind Energy

Leading the Charge in 2024
First on our list of standout offshore wind energy projects in 2024 is the Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm. This groundbreaking project represents the world’s first floating wind farm dedicated to powering offshore oil and gas platforms, marking a significant milestone in the wind energy sector.

Location and Leadership
Situated in the Norwegian North Sea, approximately 140 km from the coast, the Hywind Tampen project is driven by a consortium of industry leaders including Equinor, Petoro, OMV, Var Energi, Wintershall Dea, and INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS.

Operational Milestones
Since becoming operational in Q3 2022 and reaching full capacity in the summer of 2023, Hywind Tampen has demonstrated an impressive system capacity of 88 megawatts (MW). This achievement solidifies its status as both the world’s first and largest floating offshore wind farm, with Equinor overseeing nearly 47% of the global offshore floating wind capacity.

Technological Innovation
The wind farm features 11 advanced turbines, each with a capacity between 8 and 8.6 MW, playing a crucial role in powering Equinor’s Snorre and Gullfaks oil and gas fields. The innovative use of floating concrete spar structures anchored at depths of 260 to 300 meters sets the stage for significant advancements in floating wind technology.

Hywind Tampen serves as an experimental platform, aiming to integrate new and larger turbines, streamline moorings, develop concrete substructures, and explore the synergy between gas and wind power generation systems.

Environmental Stewardship
Beyond its technological achievements, Hywind Tampen exemplifies environmental responsibility. It is expected to supply around 35% of the annual electricity needs for the Gullfaks A, B, and C and Snorre A and B platforms. This will significantly reduce reliance on gas turbines for these offshore fields, cutting CO2 emissions by 200,000 tonnes and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 1,000 tonnes each year.

Government Support
The Norwegian government’s dedication to advancing offshore wind energy is evident in its support for Hywind Tampen. Enova and the Norwegian Business Sector’s NoX fund have collectively contributed over NOK 2.8 billion (£212 million) towards technology development and emission reduction efforts in offshore wind energy.

A Vision for the Future
As Norway’s first offshore wind farm, Hywind Tampen reflects the country’s ambitious goal to generate 30 GW of offshore wind by 2040. By integrating renewable energy into the Norwegian market, this project is setting the stage for a sustainable energy future and creating new industrial opportunities for Norway’s expanding offshore wind sector.
